There’s been a bit of shizz slinging of late regarding Madonna‘s new album, her world tour and whether we should be calling either a success.

After earning positive reviews and debuting strongly at #1, MDNA, experienced a sharp sales decline in its second week and a majority of her US tour dates have yet to sell out. Those two facts taken together sent a few music writers down the rabbit hole, with some going so far as to say Live Nation, which signed Madonna to a $120 million 360 deal with in 2007, was concerned over both her album and concert ticket sales given the size and length (10 years) of their commitment to the Queen of Pop.

Yesterday, Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary hit Twitter to address the rumors and now Arthur Fogel, Chairman of Live Nation Global Touring, talked to Billboard, saying that not only is business brisk for Madonna’s tour but it is actually “on track to end up in the top 10 tours of all time.”

First, what many of the reports fail to mention is that Madonna’s last tour, 2008-09’s “Sticky & Sweet” jaunt, was actually her first venture under her Live Nation deal, and it’s enormous success ($408 million in grosses, making it the third highest grossing tour ever and the most successful by a solo artist) most certainly offset a great deal of M’s sign-on cost. Merchandising is also a major factor in Live Nation’s revenue stream and it controls all of that for Madonna’s tours, creating another significant source of revenue for the concert promotion giant.

Perhaps most importantly with regard to MDNA‘s sales, Madonna’s 360 deal is, at its core, touring and merchandise-driven, so talk that the company will take a loss on the album if it doesn’t sell 15 million copies (as has been reported) is a bit of a reach. (Quick, name the last album by any artist to sell 15 million copies…)

Talking to Billboard, Fogel said, “To say this tour is not performing is so off base I don’t even know what to say. When this tour is said and done, combined with ‘Sticky and Sweet,’ you’re talking $750 million in gross ticket sales. That sounds pretty impressive to me.”

 

“You can do the math,” Fogel continued. “46,000 in Istanbul, 44,000 in Milan, 39,000 in Florence. We sold out two arenas in Barcelona, two in Berlin, two in Amsterdam, we sold 42,000 in Edinburgh, 40,000 in Helsinki, 51,000 in Paris. If that’s trouble, give me more.”

With over a month and a half to go before the tour kicks off in Tel Aviv, Israel, and four months before it comes stateside, Fogel tells Billboard that he isn’t exactly looking for sell-outs at this point. “One of the things some people don’t get is, I don’t necessarily want to be sold out at this point; I keep trying to find tickets to sell,” he said. “Every day our people are trying to fine-tune the site lines and production kills. That’s my job. It’s great when you can say ‘sold out,’ but right now I want to keep finding tickets to sell. That’s the game.”

Sold out or not, ticket sales have been strong enough that Madonna was forced to add a second show at New York’s Yankee Stadium in early-September and a pass through the city’s Madison Square Garden in November, in addition to added shows in Washington DC, Seattle, Berlin and Amsterdam.

And to those claiming first week album sales figures for MDNA were inflated by many receiving the album as part of a (optional!) bundle deal with their concert ticket, we have a question: Don’t you think that the people who were willing to shell out $300 (or more) for a concert ticket probably would have been the first people in line to pick up the album anyway?

It seems cray … but a simple warning that Jay Z and Kanye West included at the top of their “N**gas in Paris” video may have been the difference between life and death for some of their seizure-prone fans … this according to multiple epilepsy organizations.

The concern is obvious … since the video is filled with strobe lights and quick edits. The warning at the top of the video reads, “This video has been identified by Epilepsy Action to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.”

Now, the Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy tell TMZ … “50,000 individuals lose their lives each year due to seizures and related causes. We applaud artists like Kanye West and Jay Z who recognize the potential dangers in their videos, movies and performances and are conscientious enough to warn patients and their families about the risks.”

And CURE isn’t alone in their praise … a rep for the Epilepsy Therapy Project tells us the organization “appreciates the sensitivities that Kanye and Jay Z showed in appropriately warning individuals with photosensitive epilepsy that their video may cause seizures.”

The rep adds, “Given the 4 million people who suffer from epilepsy in the US alone, we need to work together with the music industry on how best to destigmatize the condition and stop seizures and epilepsy once and for all so everyone can enjoy the music.”

After performing on Lil Wayne’s “I Am Still Music” tour and her upcoming slot opening for Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj is getting ready to hit the road solo. Young Money’s First Lady is sharing plans for her own tour in 2012.

I’ll be headlining my own tour,” the “Super Bass” rapper told UsMagazine.com, “So this is my time to be a student and to learn and to absorb all of this information and then take that knowledge and create an amazing Pink Friday tour at the top of 2012.”

She may have new music to perform by then. The hip-hop Barbie previously teased about her sophomore album. “You’ll get another album within 12 months,” she told KIIS FM’s JoJo. “You’ll get the announcement for the next album in September.”

Before she heads out on her own, she will pick up some tips from Britney Spears on the pop star’s “Femme Fatale” tour starting June 17. “I’m honored to be out with Britney. She’s freakin’ paved the way for pop culture,” added Nicki. “We are in talks to hit the stage together but that is up to her. I would love to, of course. If we do something on tour, it will probably be the [‘Till the World Ends’] remix. I’m sure there are so many things I’m going to learn just by watching her.

From the heart of Humboldt County, California, where the redwoods meet the Pacific, Jah Sun emerges as an artist dedicated to global and social healing. Fusing the sounds of hip-hop, reggae and world music with conscious and uplifting lyrics, he hopes to awaken the human spirit and inspire others to live to their ultimate potential.

 

Jah Sun brings his message of love and unity with a variety of vocal styles. From fierce hip-hop explo- sions, to melodic ballads, rootsy anthems and sensual dancehall licks, he brings something for everyone. Re- gardless of style, the common theme throughout all his music is the consistent message of positivity, love and respect, and kindness to all.

 

Jah Sun has gained great recognition in the reggae industry and other mainstream markets. In 2006, he was nominated for “Hip-Hop Single of the Year” at the ‘LA Music Awards’. In that same year, his single entitled ‘Fyah Dance’ was featured on the fall season premiere of MTV’s hit show, “Laguna Beach”. This momentum continued the following year when FUEL TV’s Vans Downtown Showdown featured singles “The Height of Light” and ‘Nuff a Dem’. To date, “No Bonez No Blood” has received the most international recognition with the highest rotation on radio and television worldwide.

One thing that is for sure about Jah Sun, is that since he appeared on the scene in 2006 he has been one of the fastest rising reggae talent in Northern California, selling thousands of albums and touring some of the most popular festivals in the west coast including: Reggae Rising, Earthdance, Monterey Bay, Seattle Hempfest and Northwest World Reggae Festival. Jah Sun continues to gain new fans every step of the way even in Europe where he has recently captured audiences in major cities in Italy, Sweden and Spain.

His most recent project is the recording of his newest album “Battle the Dragon” which he says was inspi- red by “the state of the world” in this current time. He explains that people are constantly battling with different elements from “the rebellions in the middle east, the riots in London and even our own – Occupy Wallstreet”, the album is an expression of how we should combat these negative situations as “it is evident that the world is ready for a new paradigm.”

Battle ‘the dragon’ can mean different things to different people, but he believes the “the dragon is an illu- sion that we are not all one people, and that we are separate from the earth and each other.” Jah Sun ex- presses great passion in the execution of his work, using personification and imagery to tell his story. In his opinion, the victory in the battle can only be achieved when people realise that that they are in fact connected to the world and each other. “I feel this is the only way to restore harmony to the earth and her children,” he said.

 

Like his recent records, the current album will feature collaborations with some of the biggest names in reggae including MOBO award winner Alborosie from Italy, Gentleman from Germany, J Boog representing the Pacific Islands, Gappy Ranks out of London and Mr. Perfect from Jamaica – the original home of reggae music. According to the Cali native, the artistes featured were carefully selected and their contribution symbolises the enormity of reggae music’s impact around the world.

“On this album I wanted to show how the music and message from Jamaica has spread all over the world. I wanted to feature guests from all over the world to show the unity in the music,” he explained. This is the fourth album recorded by the artiste since his debut in 2006. “Battle the Dragon” is scheduled to be released in 2012. The newest singles are currently available on itunes including tracks from his pre- vious albums ‘Height of Light’, ‘Stronger’ and ‘GRAVITY’ .
